Abortion remains one of the most contentious issues in American politics. Just this year some states have expanded access to abortion (such as Maryland in April), while others have taken actions to further restrict it (including Idaho, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming).
With the upcoming midterm elections in November, when a third of the Senate and the entire House of Representatives is up for reelection, abortion will continue to play a significant role in the nation’s political conversation.
Prompting this recent flurry of state-level activity is the U.S. Supreme Court’s upcoming decision in a major abortion case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
Most Americans have heard of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. But fewer are familiar with Dobbs, the case legal experts believe presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to overturn Roe and return the question of abortion’s legality to Congress and the states.
