Anchor Baptist Church, Des Moines, Iowa
Pastor Danny Capon heard about “the glory days” soon after he arrived at Grandview Park Baptist Church, Des Moines, Iowa. He joined the church while he was a college student, then led the college ministry for a time, and in 2011 became assistant pastor.
Decades earlier the church was known for its outreach ministry and Christian school—but Danny quickly learned “the glory days” were in the past, at least according to the old-timers. Church attendance and school enrollment had declined precipitously, creating significant internal pressures. Everyone knew the situation couldn’t go on much longer.
The pastor resigned, and Danny was left to ponder a question. Can the church hold together through a major shift in ministry focus?
