Each week churches gather to worship the Lord Jesus Christ with songs and hymns that reflect biblical truth and appropriately express our hearts to God. The words and music of these songs come to us from as recently as a few years to as many as several centuries ago. This fact remind us that we do not reinvent the Christian faith each week but stand on the shoulders of men and women who have lived the Christian life before us. We use their expressions of devotion and praise as our own.
There is another text we can use in our worship: the Nicene Creed. So writes Jeriah Shank in this the 1700th anniversary of its writing. It’s unusual for Baptists to use the creeds in our worship, but Jeriah helpfully unpacks the history and shows the value of how we Baptist can use this and other creeds to inform our own confessions of faith and worship of God.
