CAMBRIA, Calif.— “If we closed our eyes, we could almost feel the sunshine and smell the sea air,” says Sally Schrock about the CARBC Christian Workers’ Retreat. Although the program began with dinner Monday evening, Jan. 16, hotels started to fill up on Sunday afternoon as more than 70 CARBC pastors and Christian workers from all over California descended on the coastal town for three days of fellowship laced with dramatic Scripture recitation, reports, messages, and prayer. Sally’s husband, Ron, is state representative of the California Association of Regular Baptist Churches.

Jason Nightingale of Wordsower International quoted the books of 1 and 2 Peter to the group assembled at First Baptist Church. Jason also told about his and Sharon’s ministry of establishing orphanages for children in Liberia, Kenya, India, and Haiti. In Haiti, Wordsower International provides the funds to care for about 200 children in three Christian orphanages. The orphanages don’t turn any children away, Nightingale has said. “The goal is to feed, educate, and raise these children to maturity in Christ so they can be sent back into Haitian culture to rebuild the nation for Christ,” reports Linda Piepenbrink in the Baptist Bulletin article “The Hope of Haiti.”

“Music is a big part of any CARBC function,” says Sally Schrock. This year host pastor Chris Law and his wife, Jennifer, led the music. Missionaries and ministries across the state shared their reports. Then, inspired by the giant obstacles pastors and churches are facing, Ron Schrock spoke on “Our Goliaths.”

Ending the retreat, attendees gave their applause and thanks to Pastor Law and First Baptist Church and to Council of Fourteen Chairman Kiyle Decker, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Eureka, Calif., for their hard work in planning and hosting the conference. Sally says, “The annual Christian Workers’ Retreat is always a highlight of the CARBC year!”
