Best Way to Lose Church Members

SAN JOSE, Calif.—When Pastor Ron Shaw of Sunrise Valley Baptist Church learned of church member Sidney Capillas’s call to begin a new church, he thought, “I don’t want to lose him and his wife.” But immediately another thought followed: “I want to do all I can to encourage Sidney and Anna.”

Sidney and Anna Capillas were active members of Sunrise Baptist Church—teaching Sunday School, serving in Awana, and participating in the music ministry. For several years Sidney, a graduate of Doane Baptist Seminary, Iloilo City, Philippines, believed God was calling him into the ministry. He shared that calling with his pastor and the church deacons, who enthusiastically got behind his church-planting endeavor. Sunrise Baptist Church became the sending church for Sidney and Anna, commissioning them for the Lord’s service as pastor and wife of the newly formed Northside Harvest Baptist Church in Milpitas (North San Jose), Calif. Sunrise Baptist prays for their ministry, provides financial support, and encourages them personally.

Recently GARBC National Representative John Greening enjoyed fellowship with Pastors Shaw and Capillas over lunch, learning more about the ministries to which God has called them. John expressed, “Churches planting churches—my prayer is for many new works to spring up in our association!”
